Over the years, I’ve heard and read a lot about Mount Dora Florida and yet I never considered it as a weekend destination for us because it is primarily known for its antique stores.
We are not antique-ers.
But when looking for Florida weekend getaway ideas, Mount Dora came up several times in conversation. One friend described it as a “quaint New England town plopped in the middle of Florida.”
We decided to give it a try and both of us left there really glad we took the time to visit.
We stayed at a fantastic bed and breakfast, Heron Cay, run by husband and wife team Margie and Randy, that overlooks Lake Dora. The rooms were incredible and the breakfasts were oh so delicious. Randy makes the best eggs and Margie’s banana bread is to die for!
There’s a ton of things to do in Mount Dora. From Heron Cay we could walk downtown, which only really encompasses about four streets or so, but offers so many restaurants and shops that will fill your days and nights.
We particularly enjoyed having drinks at the Lost Parrot, dinner at Pisces Rising, and dessert at Cecile’s French Corner.
With the lake right there, there are also a ton of activities from taking a seaplane ride or a hot air balloon ride to kayaking and more. We decided to take a boat tour on Premier Boat Tours and we saw a ton of Florida birds and alligators. It was amazing!
The entire weekend was a blast! If you’re looking for a weekend getaway, I would suggest you check out Mount Dora. And if you’re an antique-er, you’ll probably love it even more!
