Florida is a big state.
I remember when we first moved here … that long drive from Jersey … and as soon as we hit the Florida state line and I turned to my husband all excited, he broke the news that we still had another six to seven hours ahead of us before arriving at our new Naples home. What?!
Now I can appreciate Florida’s size because it gives us endless options when looking for a weekend getaway.
Recently, we drove up to Weeki Wachee, the home of Florida’s mermaids! The mermaids are one of Florida’s oldest roadside attractions dating back to 1947. The mermaids swim in this natural spring that is so deep its bottom has never been found.
During our visit, we were lucky enough to see some of the former mermaids perform. Mermaids from the 1940s to the 1970s donned their mermaid costumes again for a special performance that is still continuing on select weekends.
Seeing the show made me feel a part of Florida nostalgia and I’m glad we took the time to see it. It’s fascinating to see these ladies perform synchronized numbers underwater while breathing through a small tube.
